The Hess Drive Home Each month, the Missions Committee highlights a group or organization that the church supports through our Missions budget and offerings. This month we focus on the Hess Drive Home. 1182 Hess Drive is the address of a home that was established in 1989 to provide a place in the community for developmentally disabled adults. The home aims to give support to families and older parents and provide individuals a community in which to live after parents have passed away. Six men currently live at the Hess Drive home, including Oakhurst members Doug Rowell and Jason Sundy. Doug was the first person Lanny Peters baptized, shortly after arriving at Oakhurst! The home is managed by Josh and Henrietta Hand on weekdays and by volunteers on weekends. Some residents stay with their families on weekends. Neomia Sundy sounded the call for a mission group at Oakhurst that founded the home. The Georgia Baptist Convention has worked in partnership with our church, through its agency the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, to resource the home and is the owner of the property. Oakhurst provides a home church and community for the residents and staff, including a Sunday School class called the “All Right Class.” |
